Runaway barge captured near Glasgow

Posted

A runaway barge had to be rescued on the Missouri River at Glasgow on Friday after breaking away from an ice jam in Kansas City.

According to Missouri River Relief, the upheaval caused four towboats and several barges to break loose after they were moored in the ice caused by a recent arctic blast. One towboat reportedly sank, and other craft were recovered near Kansas City.

But one unmanned barge got away and floated downstream, and it was feared a collision could damage bridge piers downriver. It was recovered by the Ellis Construction towboat, “Joanna,” captained by Scotty Pond, before it could run into the bridge that cross the river.

Right: Surface ice can be steadily flowing downriver as the barge is captured by Capt. Pond.
